IN THE MEANTIME

In my post last week, I referred to two questions by Anglican bishop and theologian, N. T. Wright: “What are we waiting for?  And what are we going to do about it in the meantime?” (Surprised by Hope).  Today I am waiting for my internet connection to be reinstalled.  An electrical surge burned up our internet router three days ago.  In the meantime, I am thinking about the fact that one day life as I know it in this finite body will end.  

In the meantime, there is work to do in the kingdom.  And in the meantime… I want to spend my days letting my spirit dance, savoring the gift of each moment (like the aroma of cinnamon in my cup of hot coffee), not seeking after pleasure, but living out an attitude of thankfulness.

While there is still time, I want to learn how to love others unselfishly, even though I don’t know what that will require of me tomorrow.  

I want to “keep oil in my lamp” until the bridegroom returns (Matthew 25:1-13). 

Some study notes on 2 Thessalonians says it this way: “Busy Waiting. Every generation of Christians must face the dilemma of how to live in the tension between the possibility of Christ’s immediate return and the impossibility of predicting the moment..."

Paul challenges us: " ‘But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary of doing good (2 Thess. 3:13).’  Herein lies the secret of being ready for Christ’s return. If the hope of His arrival stirs up a wholehearted commitment to do good for His sake, we will be ready for Him.  We must be busy waiting.” NKJV Study Bible, page 1907.
